James and I met Mary Kate and her husband Jeff at the Historic Oakland’s Wedding and Event Expo this year and we were so happy to have a table next to them. We had a great time the whole event chatting with them about how Mary Kate got started with her own photography business. She is a “hopeless romantic, lover of light, travel, and the soft, glowing colors brought to life on film.”

Here are my three tips for choosing the perfect photographer.

1. Style and Aesthetic: Look for a photographer whose style aligns with your vision. Whether you prefer classic, candid, or artistic shots, finding a photographer whose portfolio resonates with you ensures you’ll love the final results.

2. Personality and Connection: Your photographer will be by your side throughout the day, so it’s crucial to choose someone you feel comfortable with and who understands your personality and preferences. A good connection with your photographer can make the entire experience more enjoyable and relaxed.

3. Experience and Professionalism: Opt for a photographer with experience shooting weddings, as they’ll have the skills to handle various lighting conditions, navigate tight schedules, and capture all the important moments seamlessly. Additionally, professionalism and reliability are key traits to look for to ensure a smooth and stress-free experience on your wedding day.

I started weddings after my own wedding. Our photographer didn’t make us feel comfortable being in front of the camera and I really felt like it was what I paid him for. I realized I could do better and give couples the experience they deserve!
